A Tale of Two Cities | Vienna to Manchester

As you might have guessed from the tumbleweed floating across this desolate blogspot, this is the first post on my brand new blog, so welcome! For the foreseeable future, my Dorm Diary is going to cover my day-to-day mishaps and the more marvellous moments of my upcoming University life, the many travels that I aim to indulge in, and the tips and tricks I pick up along the way. So who am I, where have I been, and where am I going?

I suppose that I’m what most would call a born-and-bred country bumpkin. Raised and reared in the depths of the West Country, I’ve lived a life surrounded by beautiful scenery and bountiful accents, but day-in-day-out, those novelties fade. That’s why I’ve turned my hand to the travelling scene. We were brought up testing Europe-wide cultures with our parents, and I’ve managed to get a taste for more as of late. As I write, I’ve just set my suitcases down after returning from a month in the world’s city of cakes – Vienna. I spent six spectacular weeks sampling Sacher Torte and reaping the rewards of teaching English to Austrian children just outside of the capital. Austria might not be to everyone’s taste for a trip to the continent, but I’ve never before been more enraptured by a city, a culture, or a community, and I can’t imagine a better kicking board for the life I’ve got ahead of me.

Day trips from Vienna to Budapest
Stepping back onto the tarmac in England, I had a stressful time facing me: both results day and the move to University (as far as I knew) were looming just around the corner. Thankfully, I surprised myself and everyone around me, and made it into my University of choice. So with a scraped-success and a renewed sense of Fernweh, it’s T minus one week until I embark on my newest journey: 200 miles across the English countryside to Manchester.

I’ve got 4 years of University life ahead of me: with my time split between a French and German Joint Honours degree, what I hope will be a more exciting social life, and a year living in France and Germany – the best snippets of which will end up amalgamated right here on My Dorm Diary.

So stay tuned and see you round, blogosphere!
