Chills, Chocolate and Another City | Winter Break

Happy New Year, Bonne Anné and Frohes Neues Jahr! To usher in the New Year I'm back at home, which has meant a lot of travelling, a lot of celebrating and a lot of revision.
While back in Manchester, I suffered a week of freak weather. I've been here a year and a half now, so thought it safe to assume that I was familiar with the cold and wet that Manchester is known for How wrong I was. We were hit by hail, sunshine, snow and rain in the space of a few days. I don't mind a chill, and I love some sun, but I wish Manchester would make up its mind!

To warm ourselves up a little and distract ourselves from a horrific influx of revision, me and a couple of friends piled into a local cafe, Home Sweet Home, in Manchester's Northern Quarter and got our hands on some of Manchester's finest hot chocolate. Not a bad decision, I must say.

Manchester's finest
From there, it was time to head home. One long car journey later, and I was pulling myself out of bed at 5:30 to go into University with my sister. Thankfully, I'm on holiday now, so no classes for me. I spent my day meandering round Clifton and enjoying the sunrise from the Boston Tea Party cafe.

Fingers crossed my exams go well!

La Ville Lumière | Summer Part 2

So what was the rest of my summer, if work was Part one? Well, the biggest impact on my summer was my birthday present, the fulfillment of a dream (of mine, and of many); Paris! City of love, fashion capital of the world, home of artists and poets and writers and everything else it's famous for, Paris was a dream. My sister and I made an ad-hoc decision to jump on the Eurostar, skip under the Channel and spend a weekend there. We went full tourist, and managed most of the major sights in two short days. Vertigo held me back from climbing La Tour Eiffel, but all in good time.

Naturally, I fell deeply, desperately, and quite disgustingly in love. A true cliché, Montmarte is the most beautiful quartier of any city I have (and probably will) visit. That said, I'd like to point out that the Eiffel Tower is a glorified piece of metal. It's a wonderful landmark, but it is what it is; a tall, rusty iron triangle. Iconic, yes. Incredible, undoubtedly. Beautiful? Hmm.

A holiday it might have been, but it wasn't without its benefits. I now have a solid (some might say stubborn) desire to spend the six francophone months of my year abroad at the Sorbonne. It seems that every member of staff at the University of Manchester is determined to put me off, but it's not going to happen. Whats more, Paris gave me back my painter's hand. How could it not? As soon as I got back I cracked out the watercolours.

As is everyone who sets foot in the city of dreamers, I was captivated by the architecture. I set to work on a Parisian window I'd snapped over there. You can see the result on my instagram. I fell back into painting mode and reached to my travels in Berlin for inspirtation.

JUST A WEEKJust a week after returning from Paris, I was off again. Where? Back to the good old rainy city; Manchester. It was that time again: University called, and after a long summer of failures, successes, and repetition, I answered willingly. I moved into my new house [unfortunately not without problems] and threw myself into life as a second year. I've spent the last 12 weeks diving into French Cinema, translating what seems like every literary text in the French speaking world, and haphazardly trying to set my year abroad in stone. It's been a mad one, but God it's been good.

Fallowfield is beautiful as ever [read: Fallowfield doesn't look like a sh*thole when you look at it in the right light], Uni is hectic, Paris is wonderful, and I'm back.

Amidst Exams | Days 41-46

Exams, exams, exams. Life's not too fun during exam season. Still managing to find some joy in my days though!
Caught Big Brother watching the moon
Retail therapy to ease the exam strain
Time for tennis with the niece and nephew
Fresh after a downpour
Discovered a funky new building in Manchester
It's finally sunny and they've boarded up our windows!
On the up side, I'm half way through my exams! Only three weeks left and then I'm completely done. Believe me, I'm counting the days. On a lighter note, I saw the new Studio Ghibli film, The Wind Rises, a couple of days ago; so expect a review!

Pies & College Tries | Days 35-40

The battle of the assignments is over, and 3/8 exams have come and gone. What does that mean? More revision! Not as exciting as it seems, right? Here's what I've been up to:

A Level History followed me to Uni
Last Essay knocked right out of the park
Reenacting Figlmüller's Viennese schnitzel with Libbi
Only 4 weeks left in this beautiful building
A trip to Pieminister was just what the doc ordered
Didsbury really is a sight for sore eyes
I have noticed that my 100happydays is slowly being overtaken by food, and it doesn't help that I've not had time for the gym for a few weeks. But unhealthy habits aside, with these assignments off my back, I've been able to put some more time into revision and the long awaited Locke review. So keep your eyes peeled - Hardy will be here before the week's out!

AFK and Assignment Overload | Days 27 - 34

Apologies are in order! I've been Away From Keyboard for a little over a week now, but some serious work has been in order. After arriving back in Manchester I realised how little time I had to do a veritable pile of work, so I had to knuckle down and give DormDiary a break. But I've kept up with my happydays, so I'll bring you up to date!

Currywurst at Bierkeller
My new home - Ashburne Library (with a side of Suits)
Staring out at the sun whilst being locked in the library
A post-Easter gift from my sister (gone in 5 minutes!)
The cutest gift ever from Lily - from Cambodia!
A break from study - a lot of laughs
One of my favourite Hopper pieces from May
Nostalgia for last year's travels to Budapest
While I've been seriously at my studies, I've still had time to live [apart from a couple of days spent in the library]. I'm going to be posting my happy days every fourth day for a few weeks - just until I've got a break in exams. Regarding the Locke review, it's in slow progress but it is on it's way - there's no way I'm missing a chance to plaster DormDiary with pictures of Tom Hardy. No way.

Have a good weekend chickens!

Cityscapes and Skyrises | Day #16 to 18

Three days later and finally a blog post appears! I've been busy with packing and travelling to come home for a week, so I've been AFK for a few days. So it's three photos in one day today.
Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna
Owen's Park, Manchester
Sunset, Bath
That last one is definitely my favourite [see it better on my instagram] in terms of aesthetics, but the first is in terms of happiness level. Schönbrunn Palace was seriously beautiful; one of Vienna's biggest landmarks. It was a boiling hot day when we visited, and the hill you have to walk up to get there is an absolute killer, but it was definitely worth it. The middle is Owen's Park Tower in Fallowfield, and in front of it are my halls. I know that we're conditioned to think that cityscapes and skyrises are eyesores, but sometimes the tower can be pretty - especially this spring. The last is a picture from my bedroom window. I came home today, and while I'm ecstatic to see my puppies, my sister and my best'un, and soak up some long-awaited sun, I can't help but miss having an Ethernet connection [therefore flawless internet] while I'm snuggled up in bed, and corner shops open round the clock. I guess it's going to take a day or two to adjust away from city life?

Absence, Signs and Sun | Days 11 & 12

First things first: sorry about the absence. I decided to go to the gym late last night when I usually write my posts, so I missed my slot. It just means two happy days today instead of one.

The first made me chuckle; I tend to notice grammatical mistakes because of my degree, and I'm always astonished to see that these things don't get checked. The second is my dorm room here; the light flows in really nicely just as the sun peaks in the sky.

Until next time,
